The Food and Drug Administration approved the first 3D printing mask that complies with regulatory standards to protect clinical care professionals from COVID-19. The statement came from a tweet released by Veterans Healthcare Innovation Ecosystem.

The Stopgap 3D Print Face Mask created by the VHA team is a personal protective mask that healthcare professionals can use to protect themselves against the liquid barrier from the novel coronavirus.

The mask acts as a tight fit around the mouth and nose, clinging to the ears. The mask is also easily disinfected and includes a piece of reusable filter.

According to the issued instructions issued, the mask should not be used as a replacement for traditional respiratory masks approved as personal protective equipment, such as N95 masks, and is not suitable for high-level inhalation protection in clinical areas.

Respirators are the most protective mask against the transfer of dust particles, such as viral aerosols, spread by a infected virus.

The rapid endorsement of the 3D-printed mask comes amid reports from healthcare workers who lack critical personal protective equipment when they are at the forefront of a pandemic, partly due to slowing global supply chains.

In response, the FDA recently issued a memorandum of understanding between NIH, VHA and the FDA. The public-private partnership aims to accelerate the exchange of information and the production of personal protective equipment with 3D printing and other parts for medical devices for rapid response to health emergencies.

Collaboration with an additive manufacturer in America accelerates the approval process for COVID-19 equipment using the NIH 3D Print Exchange, an existing open source tool that allows anyone who has a potential 3D biomedical prototype to upload and share them.
