Strong Claws

Aardvarks use their large front claws to dig 2-foot (0.6 meter) holes in 15 seconds to quickly get to their favorite food: termites and ants. Aardvarks have long, sticky tongues that can be up to 12 inches long (30 centimeters). They are able to dig termite mounds and ants every night ant nests and slurp up and swallow tens of thousands of insects.

Aardvarks are most active at night and tend to live alone. In the afternoon they sleep curled up in a ball in the burrows. As the night falls, the aardvarks will carefully leave their dens, jumping around in search of predators. They can see at night, but otherwise they have poor vision and are color-blind. They rely on their senses for sound and smell, using their long ears and muzzles to get around and find insects.

Aardvarks are nocturnal. They spend a hot African afternoon, holed up in a cool underground grooves, dug with their powerful feet and claws, resembling small spades. After sunset, aardvarks make good use of these nails to get their favorite food—termites.
