An alarm clock (or sometimes just an alarm) is a clock designed to alert a person or group of people at a specific time. The main function of this clock is to wake people from night sleep or short sleep; sometimes used for other reminders. Most use sound; some use light or vibration. Some have sensors to determine when a person is in an easy stage of sleep, so as not to wake a person who is deep asleep, which causes fatigue, even if the person had enough sleep. To turn off the sound or light, a button or handle on the clock is pressed; most alarm clock automatically turn off the alarm if left unattended for a long time. The classic analog alarm has an additional manual or input dial, which is used to determine the time when the alarm will sound. Alarms are also used in mobile phones, watches and computers.

Many alarms have radios that can be set to play at a specific time, and they are known as clock radios. Some alarms can set multiple alarms. Progressive alarms can have different alarms for different times and play music of your choice. Most modern televisions, computers, mobile phones and digital clocks have alarm functions that turn on or sound at a specific time.

Traditional mechanical alarms clock have one or two bells that ring with the main spring, which sets in motion a mechanism for quickly moving the hammer back and forth between two bells or between the inside of the bell. On some models, the metal cover on the back of the clock also serves as a bell. With an electronically activated electronically controlled alarm, the bell is triggered by an electromagnetic circuit and an armature to re-enable and disable the circuit.

Digital alarms may make other noises. Simple battery alarms emit a loud buzzing or beeping sound to wake you up, while newer alarms can speak, laugh, sing or play nature sounds.

Many modern mobile phones have built-in alarms that do not need to turn on the phone to ring the alarm. Some of these mobile phones have the ability for the user to set the alarm ringtone, and in some cases, music can be downloaded to the phone and then selected for playback to wake up.
