Application software (app in short) is a program or group of programs designed for end users. Examples of applications include a word processor, spreadsheet, accounting application, web browser, email client, media player, file viewer, console game or photo editor. The collective application software of the noun applies to all applications together. This contrasts with system software, which focuses primarily on computer operation.

Applications can be bundled with the computer and its system software, or published separately, and can be encoded as proprietary, open source, or university projects. Applications created for mobile platforms are called mobile applications.

In information technology, an application (application), application program or application software is a computer program designed to help people do business. Depending on the action for which it was developed, the application can manipulate text, numbers, audio, graphics and a combination of these elements. Some application packages focus on a single task, such as word processing; others, called integrated software, include several apps.

The word “application” used as an adjective is not limited to “or refers to application software”. For example, concepts such as application programming interface (API), application virtualization, application life-cycle management, and portable applications apply to all computer programs, not just application software.

Application software typically distinguishes between two main classes: closed-source software and open-source applications, and free or proprietary software applications.

Proprietary software is protected by copyright, and the software license provides limited usage rights. The principle of open-closed type states that software can be “open only for expansion, but not for modification.” Such applications may receive additions only from third parties.

Free open source software must be launched, distributed, sold, or expanded for any purpose, and if it is open source, modified or restored in the same way.
