Amanda Ava Koci (born Amanda Koci; February 16, 1994), professionally known as Ava Max, is an American singer. After going through several states to pursue her childhood music career, Max signed to Atlantic Records in 2016, where she released the song “Sweet but Psycho” on August 17, 2018. This became her breakout single after reaching number one in 22 countries, including the UK, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, and New Zealand. The song also peaked at #2 in Australia and #10 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Amanda Ava Koci was born Amanda Koci in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on February 16, 1994. She was born to Albanian parents from Tirana and Sarandë and had an older brother. Three years before Max’s birth, her parents left Albania and lived in a church in Paris for a year until they received passports from a local woman, from where they immigrated to the United States and lived in Wisconsin. As a child, Max often saw her parents struggling to make money as they each worked three jobs without speaking English. Her mother was a trained opera singer and wore arias in the house, while her father played the piano.

She moved with her family to Virginia when she was eight years old. She competed in numerous song contests at the Radio Disney singing competitions in malls before entering high school. At 13, she coined the middle name Ava, which she adopted as her first name, stating that “I never felt like an Amanda.” When she was 14, she moved with her mother to Los Angeles as a result of her musical career, finding the city charming. A year later, she left for South Carolina, where she began writing songs about relationships she saw, including her brother. Max said she was grateful because it allowed her to have a normal childhood. She eventually returned to Los Angeles when she was 17 years old.

Under the stage name Ava, her debut song “Take Away the Pain” was released in May 2013, which was remixed in July 2015 by the Canadian DJ and production duo Project 46 in July 2015. Rejection of demonstrations and no return by producers and songwriters, she met Canadian record producer Cirkut at a dinner in 2014 who was also a friend of her brother. Max sang “Happy Birthday” for him, which led to the two working together, writing hundreds of songs and releasing “Anyone but You” on SoundCloud in July 2016.
