Bats are very special mammals. They are the only mammals that can easily fly. They jump high in a tree gliding through the air like a kite. Bats flap their wings and fly like a bird.
Bats live all over the world, except for some islands, and in the Arctic and Antarctic. They mostly prefer warmer regions, which are closer to the equator, and they can be found in tropical forests, mountains, farmland, forests and cities. Bats have two strategies for weathering the cold. Some migrate to warmer areas, while others go into torpor. In this short form of bat hibernation reduces their metabolism rate, reduce its body temperature and slow down its breathing and heartbeat.
Scientists have found evidence that bats already existed for 50 million years. Some scientists believe that it may be even greater. Scientists use the “fossils” (old bones), to try to learn more about how bats evolved.
The earliest fossils of bats, which we found very similar skeletons of bats today. This tells us that the bats have not changed much over the years.
Bat wings are made of two thin layers of skin stretched over the bat’s arm and fingers. Bats have a thumb and four fingers, like humans. Bat Wings go all the way down the side of the body and bat halfway down the legs.
Bats use their wings for more than just flying. They can wrap their wings around the insects or fruit to hold it during the meal.
