A bathroom is a room for personal hygiene activities and usually has a toilet, sink (basin) and bathtub, shower, or both. In some countries, the toilet is usually included in the bathroom, while other cultures consider it hygienic or impractical and give it a fixture room of its own. In the case of pits latrines, the toilet may even be outside the house. We are also talking about the available space in the home, whether the toilet is included in the bathroom or not.

Historically, bathing was often a collective activity that took place in public baths. In some countries, the general social aspect of body cleansing is still essential, such as with sento in Japan and the “Turkish bath” (also known by other names) throughout the Islamic world.

In North American English, the word “bathroom” can refer to any room with a toilet, even a public toilet (although it is more commonly called a restroom in the US and a washroom in Canada). The term “body cleansing” varies in the English-speaking world, as does the room itself’s design. A full bathroom usually refers to a bath or shower (or both), toilet and sink. The bedroom has a private bathroom or shower that can only be accessed from there. In the British terminology of real estate agents, a family bathroom is a full bathroom that does not adjoin the bedroom but with a door leading to the hallway. Jack and Jill’s bathroom (or en-suite bathroom) is located between the regular occupants of two separate bedrooms. There may also be two sinks. A wet room is a watertight room, usually equipped with a shower; it is designed to remove moisture damage and is compatible with underfloor heating systems.

There is no single definition in the United States. This usually results in a discrepancy between the announced and actual number of bathrooms on property listings. Bathrooms are generally classified as a “master bathroom,” which has a shower and bathtub adjacent to the enormous bedroom; A “full bath” (or “full bath”) containing four plumbing lines:

  • A toilet and a sink, a bath with a shower, a bath, and a separate shower.
  • “Half-bath” (or “powder room”), containing only a toilet and a sink.
  • A 3/4 bath with toilet, sink and shower, although conditions vary from market to market.

In some American markets, the toilet, sink and shower are considered “full baths”. Here, the word “bathroom” refers to a room with a toilet and a basin and nothing else.
