BioShock is a retro-futuristic video game series developed by Irrational Games, the first under the name 2K Boston/2K Australia, and developed by Ken Levine. The series is considered the spiritual successor to the System Shock series, on which many of the Irrational team worked, including Levin. As in the case of System Shock, BioShock games combine elements of a first-person shooter (FPS) and computer role-playing games (RPG), which gives the player the freedom to approach battle and other situations and is considered part of the genre of an exciting sim genre. In addition, the series is great for studying philosophical and moral concepts with a strong in-game narrative, influenced by concepts such as objectivity and American exclusivity.

The series consists of three main games. BioShock and BioShock 2 were launched in 2007 and 2010, respectively, and took place around 1960 in the fictional underwater city of Rapture. BioShock Infinite, released in 2013, is thematically and narratively related to the first games, but takes place around 1910 aboard the floating city of Colombia. With the launch of BioShock Infinite, sold over 11 million copies as of May 2015, and the sale of three games over 33 million copies as of May 2019, this series has become one of the best-selling video game franchises of all time.

The mobile version of the first game was developed by IG Fun and released in 2009. A motion picture based on the first, mainly based on computer imagery, had been planned but it was canned after the poor performance of the theatrical version of Watchmen.

Work on Infinite led Levine to radically reduce and rename Irrational Games to Ghost Story Games to work on smaller games, while 2K Games was still interested in this property. An article on Kotaku says the fourth game in the BioShock series is under development, codenamed Parkside.
