Cactus was able to collect the water with the help of its large root system. Small fine roots grow near the soil surface and to collect as much rain water as possible as quickly as possible during the few times it rains. Cactus can also have long, thick roots called taproot, which grows deeper to reach underground water supplies, when the top layer of soil is dry.
