Bells, especially the church bells are traditionally associated with Christmas for a long time. In the Anglican and Catholic churches, the church begins at sunset.
In some churches in the UK, it is a traditionally that the largest bell in the church rung four times an hour before midnight, then at midnight all the bells are rung in celebration.
In the Catholic Church, Christmas and Easter are the only times that Mass allowed to take place at midnight. Traditionally, both the midnight Mass, church bells and the altar bells rung while the priest says the “Gloria”.
