A mug is a mug. Right? Wrong. At least not if you are a coffee drinker. Some people have a favorite mug they drink every day. In fact, it can be used so that it is permanently stained with coffee. Then there are the specialty coffee cups or mugs. Those that are used to serve the most fancier coffee drinks, like the Irish coffee mug or the cappuccino cup. Each mug has its own special use which is determined by what it is used for or who uses it.

Basic Coffee Cups

These are the ordinary coffee cups that usually come with dinnerware sets. Most people get a set on their first marriage. They are usually not fanciful or isolated, but they do hold a cup of coffee. Most come with a matching saucer, if they were part of a set of dishes.

Designs and Collector Mugs

These are similar to the mugs that come in dinnerware sets, except that they are usually purchased individually. They may have photos, designs, illustrations and more. Almost all tourist locations have mugs with their city or location.

Advertisements often appear on these types of coffee mugs. Companies order them a logo to use a client always gives to keep their name in front of you.

Collectible mugs can also be of odd sizes and shapes. There are mugs in the shape of mouse ears from Florida or golf balls from the local golf resort. It seems that the manufacturers of coffee cups have an unlimited imagination.

Serious coffee mug collectors don’t even drink coffee from their mugs; they expose them and never use them. Military themed coffee mugs are an example of a collectible mug.

Specialty Coffee Mugs

There are coffee mugs specially designed for the type of coffee drink served there.

The Irish coffee mug is used to serve Irish coffee or other after-dinner coffee drink. These mugs are generally quite elegant, made of thick glass. They are often larger than traditional mugs and have a more slender design with a footed bottom.

The cappuccino mugs almost look like large bowls with handles on them. The size of the cappuccino mugs is part of the signing experience of a good cappuccino after dinner. Cappuccino mugs often have matching saucers.

Espresso cups or demitasse cups are petite cups that usually contain no more than 2 to 3 oz. liquid. They also usually have matching saucers.
