Columbus Day is celebrated in the United States in commemoration of the birthday of Christopher Columbus, a researcher who landed in America in 1492.

Most people believed that the world was flat, but Columbus believes that the world was round. He believed that you can safely sail around it. It was a very wonderful idea, because people at this age thought that the world was flat and you would fall off the edge if you were travelling too far.

Looking at a short cut in West Indies, Columbus believed that if he sailed 3000 miles to the west, he would reach Asia. He approached to the King of Portugal, John II, who asked for the support of his expedition. When the king refused, he turned to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain for their sponsorship. They did not immediately grant their request, but later they gave him sponsorship for his expedition. He sailed on August 3, 1492, with three ships: Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria. Problems with Nina and Pinta caused a delay in the Canary Islands. He departed again on September 3, 1492, and thirty-three days later, on October 12, 1492, he discovered land.

American students learn that Columbus sailed in the ocean in 1942. Of course, Columbus did not really “discover” North America, and the parts he explored were already inhabited, but his first voyage proves that the Earth is not just a round, but bigger than he thought.

Columbus Day 2018 in United States of America celebrated on Monday, 8 October.
