In his first year, Young moved due to his parents’ divorce and eventually settled in Compton, where he attended Compton Centennial High School for a year before being forced to transfer to Fremont High School in because of bad grades. Growing up, he aspired to work on airplanes, so after leaving high school, he tried to enter the apprenticeship program of the Northrop Aviation Company, but he was refused due to bad grades. Realizing that the poor academics would not get him a job, he changed his focus to socialize and explore music.

When Dr. Dre entered the music scene, a new sound emerged, rap. Young flourished in the new type of music and joined World Class Wreckin ‘Cru, releasing an album with the group. He then joined rapper Ice Cube and Eazy-E, both from California, to form the group N.W.A. Their first album N.W.A. and the Posse, spoke of many difficulties that the band members experienced growing up in the hood. Their second album Straight Outta Compton, however, made N.W.A household name and gave the group momentum to produce another mixtape almost entirely written by Dr. Dre called Efil4zaggin. At this point, he started producing and writing mixtapes for Ruthless Records until he was charged with assault after hitting a reporter who brought up the dispute between Ice Cube and N.W.A.

After the ordeal and Dr. Dre paid his debt to the company, then continued his solo career. Dr. Dre’s mixtapes were unlike anything anyone had heard before. His style went out of the list of vulgarities, but his love for California was undeniable. Mixtape after Mixtape Dre pushed the boundaries of censorship under the Death Row Records label. After producing the hit “Nothin ‘but a’ G ‘Thang” and the death of Tupac Death Row has slowly sunk into the past.
