An electronic book, also known as an e-book or e-book, is a publication of books offered in digital form, consisting of text, images, or both, that can be read on a flat panel display on computers or other electronic devices. Although sometimes referred to as “the electronic version of the printed book,” some electronic books exist without a printed equivalent. E-books can be read on dedicated e-readers devices and any computer device with a controlled viewing screen, including desktops, laptops, tablets, and smartphones.

In the 2000s, there was a trend towards print and e-books on the Internet, where readers bought traditional books and e-books from websites using e-commerce systems. In the case of printed books, readers are increasingly viewing book cover images on the websites of publishers or bookstores and selecting and ordering titles online; paper books are then delivered to the reader by mail or another delivery service. With e-books, users can browse the title on the Internet, and then when they select and order the titles, the e-book can be sent to them online, or the user can download the e-book. In early 2010, e-books began to supplant general hardcover by overall publication figures in the US.

The main reasons people buy e-books are perhaps lower prices, increased comfort (because they can buy at home or on the go using mobile devices) and a more extensive selection of titles. Some follow the concept of an e-reader, a device that allows the user to view books on a screen, in line with Bob Brown’s 1930 manifesto, written after watching his first “talkie” (film with sound).
