Scattered throughout sub-Saharan Africa and South and Southeast Asia, elephants are the largest land animals in the world. Traditionally, two species of these amazing giants recognize the African elephant and the Asian elephant. For many reasons, such as poaching or habitat destruction, elephant population of the world are sharply reduced. African elephants are listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, while the Asian elephant is classified as endangered.
Elephants love water. They love to swim, dive into the water and find a lot of fun to fight with the waves. It also gives their joints a break with the buoyancy they get from the water.
Female elephant can have children until they are about 50 years old. They tend to have a new baby every 2 and a half to four years. They usually have one baby, twins are very rare.
The main reason why elephants are killed by poachers because of their tusks. Although research has proven ivory consists of dentine tissue that is similar to the bone, and yet has no special effects or qualities.
Although the elephant trunk is really huge, weighing about 400 pounds, so clever it can pick up very small things, including a single grain of rice.
