Elsa is the deuteragonist of Disney’s 2013 animated feature film, Frozen, and the protagonist of its 2019 sequel. Born with the power of ice and snow, Elsa is the eldest daughter of King Agnarr and Queen Iduna, the older sister of Queen Anna and former Queen of Arendelle. For most of her young life, Elsa feared that her powers would be monstrous. As a result, she isolated herself from the world as a means of protecting her family and her kingdom. Elsa’s anxieties would eventually trigger a curse that plunged Arendelle into an eternal winter. Thanks to Anna’s love, however, Elsa is able to control her powers and live in peace among her people with regained self-confidence.

Three years after her reign, Elsa abdicates the throne to occupy her rightful place as a snow queen, the fifth spirit of the enchanted forest, which bridges the magic of nature and people.

Elsa is loosely based on the main character from “The Snow Queen,” a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, and to a greater extent in terms of characterization, Kai from the same story. While the character in the original fairy tale was neutral, Elsa was rewritten as a tragic heroine whose personality and the role was more closely modeled on her Kai counterpart.

From the outside, Elsa looks poised, royal, and reserved, but in reality, she lives in fear fighting with a powerful secret – she was born with the power to create ice and snow. It is a beautiful ability, but also extremely dangerous. Haunted by the moment when her magic nearly killed her younger sister Anna, Elsa isolated herself, spending every waking minute trying to suppress her growing powers. Her growing emotions spark magic, accidentally setting off an eternal winter that she can’t stop. She is afraid of becoming a monster and that no one, not even her sister, can help her.

Disney’s efforts for decades to adapt The Snow Queen generally shared a common thread: trying to find a way to expand the role of the main character and make her a more active presence in the story. A common theme in attempts to adapt in the late 1990s and early 2000s was to reconfigure the story into a romantic comedy about the Snow Queen’s ice cold heart melting as she learns to love. One such attempt went almost as far as associating an elderly Kai with the Snow Queen while vilifying Gerda.
