Upslope fog form in the higher areas, where the moist air mass is forced to move up the hill. While the air mass moves up the hill, it is cooled dew point and produces a fog. This requires a rapid wind, hot and humid conditions at the surface. Unlike radiation fog, the fog is scattered type, when there is no wind is available, and it can also be formed under cloudy skies.
Where does fog can be useful?
In desert areas, where there is a small amount of rainfall, fog can be a valuable source of water.
In the Atacama Desert in Chile is one of the driest regions in the world at the beginning of the 20th century it went a parching 173 months without rain.
But that does not experience frequent fog that is moving in from the coast, which is affectionately known as the local camanchaca, which means “creeping fog.”
