It’s almost impossible to talk about the international fame of the K-Pop industry without discussing the Girls’ Generation or SNSD. The group brought K-Pop worldwide fame long before American concert appearances or millions of YouTube views were standard fare. SNSD is the first Asian female group to receive over 100 million views in five separate music videos, and is often still revered as the “The Nation’s Girl Group.”

The group officially debuted in 2007 with nine members: Taeyeon, Tiffany, Sunny, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Yoona, Sooyoung, Jessica, and Seohyun. The group released their first single “Into the New World” on Inkigayo in August of that year. They later released two new singles, “Girls’s Generation” and “Kissing You”, and then released their self-titled debut album that November.

Although their work was well-received, as their album became the 12th best-selling album of 2007 in South Korea, the group had not yet reached the level of fame by which they would subsequently become renowned for. Instead, their beginning was modest. The group debuted with a youthful image with a little make-up and the appearance in charming costumes “girl-next-door”, which later became a symbol of the group’s debut.

The group’s real rise to stardom is most closely associated with the release of the song “Gee” since 2009, an instant classic that appeared on the EP of the same name. The bubblegum pop tune currently has over 200 million views on YouTube, and the success of the song not only indicates the longevity of the viral song but also the significance of Girls’ Generation as a group.

Several artists have performed covers for the song, and Girls’ Generation continues to perform at their own concerts. The exciting chorus of the song and the sweet and lively lifestyle of the group still symbolize not only one of the group’s most popular songs, but the entire K-Pop industry, setting the standard for many other songs and performances that seem inspired by this song.

In September 2018, the second sub-unit of Girls Generation debuted, called Oh!GG, consisting of Girls Generation members, has still signed with S.M. Entertainment, those being, Taeyeon, Sunny, Hyoyeon, Yuri and Yoona.

In addition, several members of the group have independent careers that have no signs of delay. Notably, leader Taeyeon has many solo works, including several albums, music videos, and many features with other artists, including Crush, Verbal Jint, and DEAN.

Tiffany and Seohyun also have solo albums and music videos, while Hyoyeon released two singles.

Meanwhile, Yuri, Sunny, Sooyoung, and Yoona appeared many times in variety shows and several dramas, with some participants playing leading characters in their shows. Finally, former member Jessica released a solo album and Christmas EP while managing her fashion brand Blanc & Eclare.
