Football nets were invented by Liverpool engineer John Brodie in 1891, and they needed help in discussions about whether or not a goal had been scored.

In sports, the goal is a physical structure or area in which the attacking team must send a ball or puck to score points. In some sports, the goal is the only way to count, and therefore the end result is expressed in the total number of goals scored by each team. In other sports, the goal may be one of several set number of points than the others.

The structure of the goal varies from sport to sport. Most often it is a rectangular structure that is placed on each end of the playing field. Each structure usually consists of two vertical stairs, called goal posts, supporting a horizontal crossbar. The goal line, marked on the playing surface between the goal posts delineates the door area. Thus, the objective is to send a ball or puck between the goal posts, below or above the crossbar (depending on the sport) and the arrow. Less often than in basketball or netball, goals are ring-shaped. The structure is often accompanied by an auxiliary net, which stops or slows down the ball upon reaching the goal.
