The green card, officially known as the Permanent Resident Card, is a document issued to immigrants under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) as proof that the bearer is granted residence in the United States. Green card holders are known as Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR) or green cardholders. There are about 13.2 million holders of green cards, of which 8.9 million are eligible for U.S. citizenship. About 65,000 of them serve in the U.S. Army.

Green card holders have the legal right to apply for U.S. citizenship after they demonstrate, with evidence prevailing, that they, in particular, have lived in the United States for at least five years and are individuals with good moral character. People under the age of 18 are automatically granted U.S. citizenship if they have at least one U.S. citizen parent.

Each legal resident issues a “permanent resident card” from the U.S. government, commonly known as a “green card” because of its historic greenish color. Previously, it was called an “alien registration card” or “alien registration receipt card.” In exceptional cases, immigrants 18 years of age and older may spend up to 30 days in prison for not carrying their green cards.

Green card applications are processed by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), but in some cases, an immigration judge or member of the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) acting on behalf of the Attorney General may provide a residence permit during the relocation process. Any authorized federal judge can do the same by signing and issuing an order.

LPR can become a “removable” United States after a conviction, especially if it involves a particularly serious crime or serious crime, “for which the term of imprisonment has been completed within the previous 15 years.”
