Ashley Nicolette Frangipane (born September 29, 1994), professionally known as Halse, is an American singer, songwriter, and activist. After gaining attention from her music on social media, in 2014, she was signed by Astralwerks and released her debut EP Room 93 later that year.

Since then, Halsey has won one Billboard 200 album with Hopeless Fountain Kingdom (2017), as well as two number two albums with Badlands (2015) and Manic (2020). She won two number-one singles Billboard Hot 100 singles, including “Closer” featuring The Chainsmokers and “Without Me”; she also scored five singles from “Bad at Love.” Halsey has sold over a million albums and has aired over six billion times in the US. All three of her studio albums are accompanied by a headlining tour.

Halsey is known for her distinctive singing voice. Her awards and nominations include four Billboard Music Awards, one American Music Award, one GLAAD Media Award, three Guinness World Records, an MTV Music Award, and two Grammy Awards. In addition to her career, she has worked in advocacy for suicide prevention, advocacy for victims of sexual violence, and protests against racial justice. Frangipane started writing music when she was 17, and in 2012 began posting videos on social media such as YouTube and Kik, notably Tumblr, under the username se7enteenblack. She became famous for her parody of Taylor Swift’s song “I Knew You Were Trouble,” inspired by Swift’s relationship with Harry Styles. She then wrote the following song about their relationship, which was posted online in early 2013. In early 2014, Frangipane went to a party and met a “music guy” who asked her to collaborate on a song with him because he liked her voice. The result – a song about her ex-boyfriend called “Ghost” was released by Frangipane on SoundCloud a few weeks after it was recorded. Within a few hours, the song went viral on the Internet and was subsequently linked to several recordings and eventually charting and going on the radio. She signed with Astralwerks, feeling that they gave her more creative freedom than other labels associated with her.

After that, Frangipane played many acoustic shows in different cities under different stage names. She chose Halsey as her permanent stage name because it is an anagram of her first name and a reference to Halsey Street in the New York subway station in Brooklyn, a place where she spends a lot of time. When she was a teenager, she also said Halsey was the most popular name she used.
