New Year’s Day is a national holiday celebrated on January 1, the first day of the New Year, according to the Gregorian and Julian calendars. The New Year marks the date of new-found happiness and a clean slate. For many who celebrate the New Year, this is an opportunity to learn from the past year and make positive changes in their lives.

New Year is one of the oldest holidays that is still celebrated, but the exact date and nature of the celebration changes over time. It originated thousands of years ago in ancient Babylon, celebrated as an eleven-day festival on the first day of spring. During this time, many cultures use the sun and moon cycle to determine the “first” day of the year. It wasn’t until Julius Caesar adopted the Julian calendar that January 1st became a common day of celebration.
