A hashtag, represented by a number or hash symbol, #, is a type of metadata tag used on social media platforms such as Twitter and Instagram and other microblogging services. Allows users to apply dynamic custom tags that help other users easily find messages with a specific topic or content. Users create and use hashtags by placing a hash symbol in front of a word or unlabeled phrase in a message. The hashtag can contain letters, numbers, and underscores. Searching for this hashtag yields any message that someone has tagged with it. Therefore, the archive of hashtags is collected in one stream under the same hashtag. For example, on Instagram’s photo-sharing service, the hashtag #bluesky allows users to find all posts tagged with that hashtag.

The use of hashtags was first suggested by Chris Messina in a tweet in 2007, which, although initially decried by Twitter as a “thing for nerds,” eventually led to their use that quickly spread across the platform. Messina, who did not try to patent the use because he believed they were “they were born of the internet, and owned by no one,” was later credited as the hashtag’s godfather. By the end of the decade, hashtags could be seen on most emerging as well as established social networks, including Instagram, Facebook, Reddit and YouTube – to the point that Instagram had to officially publish the 30 hashtag limit for their posts so that people don’t abuse their use, a restriction that Instagram eventually got around by posting hashtags in the comment section of their posts. By 2018, over 85% of the 50 most popular websites with internet traffic use hashtags, and their use is widespread among millennia, Gen Z, politicians, influencers, and celebrities around the world. Due to its widespread use, the hashtag was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in June 2014. The term hashtag is sometimes misused to refer to the hash symbol itself when used in the context of a hashtag. Official taxonomies can be developed from vernacular taxonomy, which has become machine-readable through the markup provided by hashtags. This process is called folksonomy.

The numeric symbol or hash sign “#” is often used in information technology to emphasize a special meaning. (This character is also called octothorpe or pound sign in the United States and hash in the United Kingdom.) In 1970, for example, the numeric character was used to indicate immediate addressing mode in the PDP-11 assembly language. When placed next to a symbol or number. In 1978, Brian Kernighan and Dennis Ritchie used # in the C programming language to indicate special keywords that the C preprocessor should process first.
