Hearthstone is a free online digital collectible card game developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment. Originally called Heroes of Warcraft, Hearthstone modernized the existing part of the Warcraft series using the same elements, characters and relics. It was first released for Microsoft Windows and macOS in March 2014, and later this year ports for iOS and Android releasing later that year. The game has a cross-platform game, which allows players on any supported device to compete with each other, limited only by restrictions in a geographic region.

The game is a turn-based card game between two opponents, which uses constructed decks of 30 cards together with the selected character with unique strength. Players use their limited mana crystals to use abilities or summon minions to attack the enemy in order to destroy the opponent’s hero. Winning matches and completing quests bring gold in the game, prizes in the form of new cards and other prizes in the game. Players can then acquire decks of new cards using gold or microtransactions to customize and improve their decks.

The game has several game modes, including casual and ranked matches, compiled arena battles and single-player adventures. New content for the game includes the addition of new cards and the game in the form of expansion packs or adventures, which at the end reward the player with collection cards.

Unlike other games developed by Blizzard, Hearthstone was an experimental game developed by a small team based on the company’s valuation of collectible card games. The game is designed to avoid the pitfalls of other digital collectible card games, excluding all possible players from the opponent during the player’s turn and reproducing the feeling of a physical card game in the game’s user interface. Many concepts, as well as artistic assets, are based on those previously published in the physical World of Warcraft Trading Card Game.

Critics praised the game and became successful for Blizzard, earning nearly $40 million a month in August 2017. As of November 2018, Blizzard has reported more than 100 million Hearthstone players. The game became popular as an export with cash prize tournaments organized by Blizzard and other organizers.
