Jelly beans are small bean-shaped candies with soft candy shells and a thick gel inner layer. The confection is sold in a wide range of colors and flavors and is made primarily from sugar.

History of Jelly Belly

It is said that jelly beans were first mentioned in 1861, when Boston pastry chef William Schrafft encouraged people to send his jelly beans to soldiers during the American Civil War. It was not until July 5, 1905 that jelly beans were mentioned in the Chicago Daily News. Most historians say that jelly beans were first associated with Easter in the United States in the 1930s, due to the shape of the eggs. Inventing plastic Easter eggs, jelly beans could go inside.

Production

The main components of jelly beans are sugar, tapioca or corn syrup and pectin or starch. Relatively small amounts of emulsifying agent lecithin, anti-foaming agents, food wax such as carnauba wax or beeswax, salt and confectionery glaze are also included. The ingredients that give each bean a character are also relatively small in proportion and can vary depending on the flavor.

Most jelly beans are sold in an assortment of eight different flavors, most of which are fruit-based. Assorted forged “spiced” jellybeans and chewing gums are also available, which include a similar amount of spice and mint flavors. The colors of the jelly beans often correspond with the fruit and the “spicy” taste.

Some premium brands, such as Jelly Belly and The Jelly Bean Factory, are available in many different flavors, including berries, tropical fruits, soft drinks, popcorn, licorice and novelty ranges, in addition to the familiar fruit and spicy flavors. Although they are also sold as an assortment, individual fragrances can be purchased from distributors.
