Jesus first came to public attention at the time of his baptism, just before his public ministry. He was known to people around him as the carpenter from Nazareth, a town in Galilee, and as the son of Joseph (John 6:42). Matthew and Luke report that Jesus was born in Bethlehem, a city near Jerusalem, known in Jewish history as the city of David. In addition, they reported that he was miraculously born to the Virgin Mary, though curiously traced its origins through David Joseph, who was engaged to Mary.
Little is known about his childhood and youth of Jesus. But about the year A.D. 28 or 29 his life interacted with John the Baptist’s career, storm prophet-preacher who came from the desert, and urged people to repent and be baptized. The controversial character, he was soon imprisoned and killed by Herod Antipas, ruler of Galilee puppet in Roman times. Jesus heard the preaching of John, and join the crowd for baptism in the Jordan River. After his baptism Jesus went into the wilderness for prayer and meditation.
It is obvious that Jesus had a consciousness of the divine call, and in the desert, he thought through its meaning. The Gospels report that he was tempted by Satan there as to what kind of leader Jesus would choose to become a miracle worker, a benefactor, which will bring the people what they want. Jesus was more difficult and less popular mission that the messenger of God’s Kingdom.
