Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. (born November 20, 1942) is an American politician who was the 47th Vice President of the United States from 2009 to 2017. A member of the Democratic Party, he was a U.S. Senator from Delaware from 1973 to 2009. Biden is the 2020 Democratic candidate running against incumbent President Donald Trump.

Biden grew up in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and New Castle County, Delaware. He attended the University of Delaware before earning a law degree from Syracuse University. He became a lawyer in 1969 and was elected to the New Castle County Council in 1970.

He was elected to the U.S. Senate from Delaware in 1972, becoming the sixth youngest senator in U.S. history. Biden was a longtime member and eventually chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He opposed the 1991 Gulf War, but supported NATO’s expansion into Eastern Europe and its involvement in the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s.

He supported a resolution authorizing the war in Iraq in 2002, but opposed an increase in US troop numbers in 2007. From 1987 to 1995, he also chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee dealing with issues related to drugs, crime prevention and civil liberties.

Biden is spearheading efforts to pass the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act and the Violence Against Women Act, and is leading six hearings to confirm the U.S. Supreme Court, including the disputes over Robert Bork and Clarence Thomas. Biden has been re-elected six times to the U.S. Senate and was the fourth senior senator when he stepped down after winning the presidential election alongside Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election. Obama and Biden were re-elected in 2012. As vice president, Biden is in charge of infrastructure, spending in 2009 to fight the Great Recession. His talks with congressional Republicans helped the Obama administration pass legislation, including the 2010 Tax Relief Act, which allowed tax stagnation in the 2011 Budget Control Act, which resolved the debt ceiling crisis; and the 2012 US Tax Relief Act, which dealt with the upcoming tax scale.

In foreign policy, Biden spearheaded efforts to negotiate a new treaty between the United States and Russia on strategic offensive arms, supported military intervention in Libya, and helped shape US policy toward Iraq, with the withdrawal of US troops in 2011. After the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, Biden led the Gun Violence Task Force, set up to address the causes of gun violence in the United States.

In October 2015, Biden announced that he would not run for president in the 2016 election. In January 2017, Obama awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom with honors. Biden announced his presidential candidacy for 2020 on April 25, 2019, and in June 2020, he passed the 1,991 delegate threshold required to secure the Democratic nomination. On August 11, 2020, Biden announced US Senator Kamala Harris as his presidential candidate in the 2020 elections.
