Karen Sheila Gillan ( born November 28 1987) is a Scottish actress and film director. She first starting acting with a guest role appeared on television before gaining recognition as Amy Pond, the main companion of the Eleventh Doctor, in the BBC One series Doctor Who (2010-2013), for which she received critical acclaim and received several awards and nominations including receiving the National Television Award. Gillan’s early roles included the horror film Outcast (2010) and the romantic comedy film Not Another Happy Ending (2013).

She moved to the US in 2013 and starred in the movie The Oculus (2013) and starred in the ABC/Hulu Selfie (2014) series. She was then widely recognized for her portrayal of the nebula in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films (2014 – present) and her portrayal of Ruby Roundhouse in the Jumanji film series (2017 – present). Gillan appeared on stage in John Osborne’s play Inadmissible Evidence (2011) and made her Broadway debut in Time to Act (2013). She wrote and starred in the drama film The Party’s Just Beginning (2018), for which she won an award at the Philadelphia Film Festival.

Karen Sheila Gillan was born in Inverness on November 28, 1987, the daughter of Marie and Raymond Gillan. Although she is of Catholic origin, she says she was not baptized or did not practice a religion.

When she turned 16, she moved to Edinburgh and completed acting classes at HNC and a Performance course at Telford College. She moved to London at the age of 18 to study at the Italia Conti Academy of Performing Arts. There she looked at a modelling agency. Before her acting career, she worked as a model, which premiered at London Fashion Week 2007. Gillan said she would not give up her acting career to return to modelling, saying that she liked it. In the modelling business, acting had always been her main interest and goal.

During a 2012 interview on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, Gillan stated that she had permanently relocated to the U.S. around the time she was shooting the film Oculus (2013).

Gillan’s early television acting career included guest appearances on several TV shows, with her first role in an episode of the ITV crime drama Rebus, a part that drove her out of school.

Gillan spent two years stint with a member of the comedy series The Kevin Bishop Show. She played many characters, including celebrities such as Katy Perry and Angelina Jolie. Gillan also appeared on television in a leading role, starring in a horror project called The Well, which aired as a series of episodic short films on BBC Two and later as a web series on BBC.co.uk.
