Finished leather is the most common element in women’s shoes. Unfinished leather is usually only found on work boots and should be treated differently from boots with finished leather. A simple test can be used to determine what type of leather boots you have:

Place a small amount of leather cleaner (preferably in the form of foam) on a leather boot. It is best to use a leather cleaner for this test; if the water is used, some leathers will have been hydrophobic (made waterproof), giving a false impression of finish. If the cleaner is easily absorbed, the boots are not finished. If the solution stays on the surface for a while, there is a kind of finish on the leather. The absorption will indicate the resistance of the strength.

General Care

The best thing for unfinished leather boots is the oil – Neat’s-foot oil or any leather conditioning oil used for gloves or baseball saddles. Just apply a generous amount on the leather and let it absorb overnight. Remove any excess oil with a soft cloth. The finished leather can be maintained with any high-quality varnish, such as keeping military boots’ shine. Follow the directions on the polishing container for best results.

Stain Removal

Attacking stains on leather is always a risky job. Always try to have a conditioner and leather cleaner available, or you can still have your boots professionally cleaned (expensive!). These two options are often impractical or available for a variety of reasons, and sometimes a store-bought leather cleaner will not remove some stains. When trying any of the methods listed below, keep in mind that all leather boots are different and that the cleaners can damage, change the color and appearance or cause cracks in the leather. When trying other cleaners and techniques, first use a small, inconspicuous area and allow the previous cleaner to dry before trying the next. Finally, always use a leather conditioner after each cleaning. This will help ensure your boots’ durability and stay in your wardrobe for a long time.

General Stains

If you do not have a leather cleaning solution, try these household products. First, try using a damp sponge. Water will not damage the leather; work the moist sponge in the stain. Let it dry and check.
