An LED display is a flat panel display that uses an array of light-emitting diodes as pixels for a video display. Their brightness allows them to be used on the outdoors, where they are visible in the sun for shop signs and billboards. In recent years, they have also been frequently used in destination signs for public vehicles, as well as in signs with variable messages on highways.

LED displays are capable of providing general lighting in addition to the visual display, as when used for stage lighting or other decorative (as opposed to informational) purposes.

LED displays can offer higher contrast ratios than a projector, and thus are an alternative to traditional projection screens and can be used for large continuous (without visible grid lines on individual displays) video walls.

MicroLED displays are currently being developed by many large corporations such as Apple, Samsung and LG.

These displays are easy to scale and offer a more streamlined manufacturing process. However, production costs remain a limiting factor.
