Lenovo Group Limited, often abbreviated as Lenovo (/ lɛˈnoʊvoʊ / Leh-NOH-voh), is a Hong Kong-based Chinese multinational technology company. It is headquartered in Quarry Bay, with additional operating headquarters in Morrisville, North Carolina, and Beijing. The company designs, develops, manufactures, and sells personal computers, tablets, smartphones, workstations, servers, electronic storage devices, IT management software, and smart TVs and is the world’s largest supplier of personal computers since March 2019. It has also launched ThinkPad and ThinkBook notebook business lines; notebook computers; for IdeaPad, Yoga, and Legion consumer lines of notebook laptops; as well as the IdeaCentre and ThinkCentre desktop lines.

Lenovo operates in over 60 countries and sells its products in approximately 160 countries. It has research centers in Beijing, Chengdu, Yamato (Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan), Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Morrisville (North Carolina, US) and Lenovo NEC Holdings, a joint venture with NEC that manufactures personal computers for the Japanese market.

Lenovo was founded in Beijing in November 1984 as Legend and incorporated in Hong Kong in 1988. Lenovo acquired IBM’s personal computer business in 2005 and agreed to purchase its Intel-based server business in 2014. Lenovo entered the smartphone market in 2012 and has been the largest smartphone supplier in mainland China since 2014. In 2014, Lenovo acquired the US-based mobile phone maker Motorola Mobility from Google. In 2017, Lenovo acquired Fujitsu’s personal computer business.

Lenovo is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and is included in the Hang Seng Index of China-Affiliated corporations, often referred to as red-chip stocks.

Liu Chuanzhi, along with a group of ten experienced engineers, founded Lenovo in Beijing on November 1, 1984, with 200,000 yuan. The Chinese government approved Lenovo’s inclusion on the same day. Jiǎ Xùfú (贾续福), one of the founders of Lenovo, noted that the first meeting in preparation for the company’s launch took place on October 17. Eleven people were present, all of the original staff. Each of the founders was a member of the Institute of Computing Technology linked to the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The 200,000 yuan used as start-up capital was approved by Zēng Màocháo (曾茂朝). At this meeting, the company’s name was agreed: Chinese Academy of Sciences, Computer Technology Research Institute New Technology Development Company.

Their first serious attempt – importing televisions – failed. The group recovered within a year by performing quality checks on computers for new customers. Lenovo soon began developing a circuit board that would allow IBM-compatible PCs to handle Chinese characters. This product is Lenovo’s first big success. Lenovo has also tried but failed to release a digital watch. Liu said, Our management team often disagreed on the trade route. This led to a lot of discussions, especially between the engineering chief and myself.
