Liu Chuanzhi, along with a group of ten experienced engineers, founded Lenovo in Beijing on November 1, 1984, with 200,000 yuan. The Chinese government approved Lenovo’s inclusion on the same day. Jiǎ Xùfú (贾续福), one of the founders of Lenovo, noted that the first meeting in preparation for the company’s launch took place on October 17. Eleven people were present, all of the original staff. Each of the founders was a member of the Institute of Computing Technology linked to the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The 200,000 yuan used as start-up capital was approved by Zēng Màocháo (曾茂朝). At this meeting, the company’s name was agreed: Chinese Academy of Sciences, Computer Technology Research Institute New Technology Development Company.

Their first serious attempt – importing televisions – failed. The group recovered within a year by performing quality checks on computers for new customers. Lenovo soon began developing a circuit board that would allow IBM-compatible PCs to handle Chinese characters. This product is Lenovo’s first big success. Lenovo has also tried but failed to release a digital watch. Liu said, Our management team often disagreed on the trade route. This led to a lot of discussions, especially between the engineering chief and myself.
