Lilium is a genus of herbaceous flowering plants that grow from bulbs, all with large prominent flowers. Lilies are a group of flowering plants that are important for culture and literature in most countries of the world. Most species come from the temperate northern hemisphere, although their range extends to the northern subtropics. Many other plants have a “lily” in their common name, but they are not associated with true lilies.

What Are “True Lilies”?

True lilies grow from bulbs and belong to the genus Lilium. Daylilies (Hemerocallis), despite having “lilies” in their name, are not true lilies. Daylilies have many leaves that grow from the crown, while true lilies usually have only one stem or shoot that grows from the bulb. Similarly, peace lilies, canna lilies, and calla lilies are not true lilies.

When Do Lilies Bloom?

Lilies tend to bloom from early summer to fall, depending on the type. By carefully blending early, mid-season and late varieties in your garden, you will enjoy their magnificent blooms from spring to the first frosts. At home, both formal and naturalistic settings, most lilies are also easily stored in containers. Plus, they make great cut flowers!

Etymology

The botanical name Lilium is the Latin form and a Linnaean name. The Latin name comes from the Greek word leírion, which is believed to refer to true white lilies, as the Madonna lily exemplified.

The term “lily” has been used in the past to refer to numerous flowering plants, often bearing only a superficial resemblance to a true lily.
