Lionel Andrés Messi Cuccittini; (Born June 24, 1987) is an Argentinian professional footballer who plays as a forward and club captain Spanish Barcelona and Argentina national team. Often regarded as the best player in the world and widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time, Messi won a record of six Ballon d’Or and a record of six European Golden Shoe. He spent his entire professional career in Barcelona, where he won a club record with 34 trophies, including ten La Liga titles, four UEFA Champions League titles and six Copas del Rey. A prolific goalscorer and creative playmaker, Messi holds the record for most goals in Liga (438), Liga and in the European Championship (50), most hat tricks in la Liga (36) and UEFA Champions League (8), and most assists in La Liga (181) and Copa America (12). He has scored more than 700 senior career goals for the club and the country.

Born and raised in central Argentina, Messi moved to Spain to join Barcelona at the age of 13, for which he made his competitive debut at 17 in October 2004. He established himself as an integral player of the club over the next three years, and in his first uninterrupted season in 2008-2009, he helped Barcelona achieve the first treble in Spanish football; that year, at 22, Messi won his first Ballon d’Or. Three successful seasons followed, Messi, winning three consecutive Ballons d’Or, including an unprecedented fourth. During the 2011-2012 season, he set La Liga and European records for most goals scored in a single season, while establishing himself as the top scorer of all time in Barcelona. An Argentine international, Messi is the top scorer in his country. At the youth level, he won the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship, ending the tournament with the Golden Ball and the Golden Shoe, and an Olympic gold medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics. His playing style as a small left-footed dribbler made comparisons with fellow countryman Diego Maradona, who described Messi as his successor.
