Big Ben, one of the most famous icons in London, is located in the tower of the Palace of Westminster, which includes The Houses of Parliament, The House of Lords, The House of Commons and Westminster Hall.

London’s Big Ben is the nickname of a 13-tonne bell located at the top of the tower, although it is often extended to include the clock and the clock tower. The tower was built in 1288, and the bell rang out its first bell on May 31, 1859. It is the world’s largest clock with four facets and the third-tallest free-standing clock tower.

Interestingly, the clock tower is not open to foreign tourists, but UK residents can organize a tour, although this leads to a walking up 334 steps to get to the top because there is no lift.

Augustus Pugin designed the clock and dials that include 312 portions of opal glass, and on each side of the watch there is a Latin inscription that indicates: ‘O Lord, keep safe our Queen Victoria the First.’

Big Ben is a popular symbol for London and the UK. The historical clock in London also plays a very important role during the celebration of the New Year’s Eve countdown, when all eyes are looking.
