Rama is the seventh avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu. His adventures, especially the killing of the demon King Ravana, are told in Vana Parva of the Mahabharata and in the Ramayana, the oldest Sanskrit epic, ever written in the 5th century BC, but with some later additions. Lord Rama, whom many Hindus consider to be the basis of a historical figure, may be the most virtuous hero from Hindu mythology, and he and his wife Sita present a picture of purity and conjugal devotion. In addition, the adventures of Rama illustrate, above all the the meaning and rewards for the fulfillment of devotional duty or dharma.

Lord Rama’s Family

Rama’s father is King Dasaratha, prince of the solar race, and his mother is Queen Kausalya. Rama was born at the end of the Second Age or the Treta-yuga, and he came to the world specifically at the bidding of the gods to deal with the terrible demon multi-headed Ravana, the king of Lanka (modern Sri Lanka). The great god Vishnu answered the call of the gods and appeared in the sacrificial fire made by Dasaratha. The pious king was presented with nectar, and he gave half of it to Kausalya, who produced half-divine Rama as a consequence. Rama has three half-brothers — Bharata, Lakshmana, and Shatrughna — all with some, albeit lesser divine qualities. Rama’s beloved brother and great companion was Lakshmanna, son of Sumitra, and his faithful servant wasthe monkey warrior Hanuman (or Hanumat).

Lord Rama’s Adventure

The first adventure of Rama happened when the sage Visvamitra asked for help in fighting the demons or raksasa. Rama and Lakshmana, leaving their childhood house at Ayodhya capital in the northern kingdom of Koshala, followed Visvamitra to his home and there killed Taraka, a terrible female demon.

Ram Sita Marriage

In gratitude, Rama received a divine weapon and went on more adventures, ending in Mithila. There, the king of Videha hosted our hero, and he met the king’s beautiful daughter Sita (also called Janaki or Maithili). The king promised the princess to marry anyone who can bend a huge bow, which was once the weapon of the great god Shiva. Rama, with his divine strength, did more than bending the bow, but he broke it in half, winning the hand of Sita, the first and most respected wife.
