When we think of models, we normally imagine the female model, strutting on the stage for fashion week. But the male modeling industry has exploded in recent years, with the growing popularity of male grooming, and as it becomes more normal for men to take a keen interest in fashion.

With many types of male celebrities, from musician to now modeled footballer, the pursuit has undoubtedly been glamorous. This transformed the idea of male modeling, from an almost embarrassing dream to a viable aspiration for men today. However, there are still many common misconceptions about men in the modeling industry. Here are a few.

All male models should look strong and butch

It is not at all true. Many of the most successful models are very skinny and feminine, and some are even androgynous. There is an appeal for men with rippling muscles, but the “looks” that are asked for will vary as much as people’s tastes – and will reflect the markets. Certain products modeled and promoted by men will have a target audience of men in their twenties. Others will target women in their thirties with children, and others may target middle-aged gay men. The thing that appeals to each of these groups will vary considerably.

Models have to be classically good looking with a big white grin

As with the big muscle misconception, it’s a little more subtle than that. Being good looking helps, but you can also be a successful male model if you are unique. This is true to some extent for female models, but much more so for male models. In addition, all the photos of these models will not give them a cheesy smile. Most of the time, male models are asked to look brooding, sad, thoughtful, dreamy – you get the idea. So being able to “act” on different emotions is more important than having a Colgate grin. Emotions come from the eyes and are supported by the posture, you can just smile, but it may seem insincere.

Becoming one is easy

It is a mistake that all kinds of models make – to think that modeling is easy money. And many people who appreciate the fact that female modeling is very difficult, always make the mistake of thinking that male modeling will be different for one reason or another. This is, of course, a mistake.
