Monsters University is the 2013 American 3D comedy cartoon created by Pixar Animation Studios for Walt Disney Pictures. It was directed by Dan Scanlon in his feature film debut and produced by Kori Rae, with executive producers including John Lasseter, Pete Docter, Andrew Stanton and Lee Unkrich. The music for the film was written by Randy Newman, making it the seventh collaboration with Pixar. This is a preface to Monsters, Inc. (2001), making it the first and currently, only time Pixar has made a prequel Monsters University tells the story of two monsters, Mike and Sulley, and their college studies, where they start as rivals, but gradually become best friends. John Goodman, Billy Crystal, Steve Buscemi, Bob Peterson, and John Ratzenberger once again perform their roles of James P. Sullivan, Mike Wazowski, Randall Boggs, Roz and the Abominable Snowman. Bonnie Hunt, who voiced Ms. Flint in the first film, voices Mike’s class teacher, Ms. Karen Graves.

Disney, as copyright holder, planned to continue Monsters, Inc. since 2005, after disagreeing with Pixar, Disney has commissioned the Circle 7 animation unit to create the film. The sequel made by Pixar was confirmed in 2010, and in 2011 it was confirmed that the film would become a prequel titled Monsters University.

Monsters University premiered on June 5, 2013 at BFI Southbank in London, England, and was theatrically released on June 21, 2013 in the United States.
