A mousetrap is a special type of trap for animals, designed primarily for catching and, as a rule, killing mice. Mousetraps are usually installed in a room where there is a suspected infestation of rodents. Large traps are designed to catch other species of animals, such as rats, squirrels, other small rodents or other animals.

The trap, which is considered the first patented lethal mousetrap, was a set of spring cast-iron jaws called “Royal No. 1”. It was patented on November 4, 1879 by James M. Keep of New York, US patent 221,320. From the description of the patent it is clear that this is not the first mousetrap of this type, but the patent is intended for this simple, easy to manufacture design. It is an industrial development of a deadfall trap, but it depends on the force of the wound spring, and not on gravity.

The jaws operated by the coil spring and the actuator are located between the jaws where the bait is held. The trip snaps the jaws shut, killing the rodent.

Lightweight traps of this style are now made of plastic. These traps do not have powerful snap like other species. They are safer for the fingers of the person placing them than other deadly traps, and they can be set by clicking on the tongue with one finger or even a foot.
