New Jersey is a state in the North Atlantic region in the northeastern United States. In the north and east, it borders the state of New York; east, southeast and south of the Atlantic Ocean; west of the Delaware River and Pennsylvania; and southwest of Delaware Bay and Delaware.

New Jersey is the fourth-smallest state by area, but 11th by population, with 8,882,190 residents by 2019 and an area of 8,722.58 square miles, making it the most populous of the 50 states, its largest city is Newark. All but one of New Jersey cities are located in the combined statistical districts of New York or Philadelphia. New Jersey was the second richest state by average household income by 2017.

New Jersey has been inhabited by Native Americans for more than 2,800 years with historical tribes such as the Lenape Coast. At the beginning of the 17th century, the Dutch and Swedes founded the first European settlements in the country. The British later took control of the region, calling it the province of New Jersey after the largest Channel Islands, Jersey, and granted it as a colony to Sir George Carteret and John Berkeley, 1st Baron Berkeley from Stratton. New Jersey was the site of several important battles during the American Revolutionary War in the 18th century.

In the 19th century, factories in Camden, Paterson, Newark, Trenton, Jersey City, and Elizabeth (known as the “Big Six”) helped drive the Industrial Revolution. New Jersey’s geographical location in the center of the northeast metropolis, between Boston and New York in the northeast, and Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington in the southwest contributed to its rapid development thanks to the suburbanization process in the second half of the 20th century.
