Niall James Horan (born September 13, 1993) is an Irish singer and songwriter. He became known as a member of the band One Direction. In 2010, Horan auditioned as a soloist at The X Factor British Singing Competition. After being excluded as soloists, Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson were combined into a group.

After the band’s hiatus in 2016, Horan signed to Capitol Records as a solo artist. His singles “This Town” and “Slow Hands” from his debut studio album Flicker (2017) have reached the top 20 in several countries. The album debuted at number one in Ireland and the United States, and in the top three in Australia and the United Kingdom. In support of the album, he embarked on toured the Flicker Sessions (2017) and the Flicker World Tour (2018). Horan’s second studio album, Heartbreak Weather, was released on March 13, 2020, and debuted at number four in the United States and number one in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Mexico.

Niall James Horan was born on September 13, 1993, in Mullingar, Westmeath, Ireland. He has an older brother, Greg Horan. His parents, Bobby Horan and Maura Gallagher divorced when he was five, so he and his brother Greg lived with their mother for a year. After spending a year apart from their father, they later decided to move in with him. He had asthma as a child. He attended St. Kenny’s National School, Elementary School, and Coláiste Mhuire Catholic Boys’ School, both located in Mullingar.

Horan tried to play the guitar that his brother bought for Christmas but couldn’t. Then 11-year-old Horan learned to play guitar by following lessons on YouTube. His aunt discovered his talent one day when she was driving with Horan when he began to sing. At first, he thought the radio was on. As a teenager, he performed at the Mullingar Arts Center during a fundraiser for the local soccer team, Shamrocks. It was also built into a support slot with former X Factor contestant Lloyd Daniels at the Academy Club in Dublin.

In 2010, at the age of sixteen, Horan auditioned for Episode 7 of The X Factor in Dublin. He sang “So Sick” and received mixed reviews from the judges. Louis Walsh was in his favor, but Cheryl Cole and guest judge Katy Perry felt he needed time to mature. Simon Cowell voted to let him go; Cole said no, Walsh said yes, and Perry decided to vote yes. Then Horan was released to the boot camp. During the boot camp, he sang “Champagne Supernova” but did not qualify for that category.
