Organic cotton is generally defined as cotton grown organically in subtropical countries such as India, Turkey, China and parts of the United States where there are no genetically modified plants and without the use of any synthetic agricultural chemicals such as fertilizers or pesticide, approved by certified organic label. It is expected that its production will stimulate and improve biodiversity and biological cycles. In the United States, cotton plantations must also meet the requirements set by the USDA National Organic Program in order to be considered environmentally friendly. This institution should determine the permitted methods of pest control, cultivation, fertilizing and growing organic crops.

By 2007, 265,517 bales of organic cotton were produced in 24 countries, while world production grew at a rate of more than 50% annually. In the 2016/2017 season, annual global production reached 3.2 million tons.

In the USA, the law requires that any manufacturer who wants to label and sell the product as “organic” must comply with the standards established in the Organic Food Production Act of 1990, adopted by the State Organic Production Program (SOP) This act defines the order and rules for the production and processing of organic crops. A list of approved organic chemicals is available.

Organic cotton is currently successfully grown in many countries; The largest producers (as of 2018) are India (51%), China (19%), Turkey (7%) and Kyrgyzstan (7%).
