A paper shredder is a mechanical device used to cut paper, ribbons or small particles. Government organizations, companies, and individuals use shredders to destroy personal, confidential, or other sensitive documents.

The first paper shredder is credited to the fruitful inventor Abbot Augustus Low, whose patent was filed on February 2, 1909. However, his invention was never manufactured.

Adolf Ehinger’s paper shredder, created on the basis of hand-crank pasta maker, was made in 1935 in Germany. It is believed that he shred his anti-Nazi propaganda in order to avoid an investigation by the authorities. Ehinger later sold his shredders to government and financial institutions that switched from a hand-operated engine to an electric motor. Ehinger’s company, EBA Maschinenfabrik, produced the first cross-section paper shredders in 1959 and continues to do so today as EBA Krug & Priester GmbH & Co. in Balingen.

The size and cost of shredders range from small and inexpensive devices designed for a certain number of pages to large units used by commercial shredding services that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and can shred millions of documents per hour. While the smallest shredders can be hand-cranked, most shredders are electrically powered.

Shredders over time have added features that enhance the user interface of the shredder. Many are now reject paper that is fed over capacity; others have security features to reduce risks. Some shredders designed for use in common workspaces or department copy rooms have noise reduction.
