Sharpener is a mechanical device for sharpening pencils. Pencils get dull, while they are used and basic shortened so sharpener shave shell and wooden pencil core, until it forms a point. This can be done manually or by a motor.

Before sharpeners, pencils were sharpened with a small knife or sandpaper. Some pencils (like a carpenter’s pencil) were sharpened with a knife, even because they are flat and can not be changed with a rotational movement.
