Here is the list of the 10 best prisons that people should at least know. Imprisonment or incarceration is a legal sanction that can be imposed by the state for the commission of a crime. Here is the list of the 10 best prisons that people should at least know.

1). The most crowded prison: Kresty Prison

The oldest and largest prison in Russia also has the dishonor of being at the top of the ranking of the most crowded prisons in the world. Originally a wine warehouse in the 1730s, the building was transformed into a 700-bed prison. It underwent further reconstruction in 1884, where the retention capacity was stretched to 980 cells. In the 1990s, the number reached narrow cells of only 4 m². The Russian government has now ordered the relocation of the prisoners to another facility as the Kresty prison will be closed shortly. There are plans to convert it to a mall where crowds will not be a problem.

2). The most well-concealed prison: Camp 1391

It has been wiped out from, but Camp 1391 certainly exists – an hour’s drive from Tel Aviv. In 2003, Israeli historian Gad Kroizer was researching the old British police buildings of the 1930s and noticed that Camp Mertz did not appear on any of the modern Israeli maps, accidentally discovering its location. This prison for high-risk political prisoners is a prisoner camp of the Israeli Defense Forces, according to Israeli officials, camp 1391 “has not been used since 2006 to detain or interrogate suspects”, but several openings by the Committee of United Nations Against Torture (CAT) to review the camp were rejected.

3). The smallest prison: Sark Prison

For a prison guard, riots and prison overcrowding are of the utmost importance when it comes to ensuring the safety of its prisoners. But that would be an unlikely thought for the guards at Sark Prison. Located on the tiny island of Sark, it would be the smallest prison in the world. The prison can only hold two prisoners, and that too overnight. For more serious crimes, prisoners are then resettled in a prison on the largest island of Guernsey. The sign above this inconspicuous diminutive structure indicates that the prison has been used.

4). The most famous prison: Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary

Alcatraz has everything to justify the “most famous” tag. Located in picturesque San Francisco Bay, it is separated from the mainland by 2.4 km of icy waters and strong currents. It held some of the most notorious gangsters since it opened in 1934 (Al Capone, Robert Stroud aka the Birdman of Alcatraz) and a very interesting story of prisoner breakout (36 men attempted 14 separate escapes).
