Raccoon have a lot of names and appellations. This is because they are located in several different regions of the United States, and exhibit slightly different characteristics, habits and lifestyle. Raccoon are part of the genus Procyon.
Raccoon are nocturnal animals, which means that they are active at night and rest during the day. At night, raccoon are hunted for food and feed. Although mainly nocturnal, they are known to the venture out in the day, from time to time for specific food sources. In the United States, these food sources are increasingly turning both residential and urban garbage cans and dumpsters.
Raccoon are omnivorous, so their diet may consist of only invertebrates plant material. Depending on the time of year, habitats and species of raccoon, food sources will differ. For example, in the late summer and autumn months, the northern raccoon are known to indulge in fruits, acorns, nuts and other seasonal foods that are rich in nutrients and calories. In the spring and early summer months, raccoon eat worms, insects, etc.
