Rats eats a variety of foods. They have a voracious appetite and will eat almost anything. They are true omnivorous scavengers, but mostly prefer grain, fodder and meat. Rats have also been known to eat soap, leather, fur, candy, milk, meat, vegetables, poultry, eggs, grains, seeds, fruits, nuts, snails and other rodents. The main value of consumption of the rat is water, because it cannot live long without it. Rats need to drink 1/2 ounces of water per day.
Brown Rats and Black Rats
There are two main types of rats brown rats and black rats which eat about the same things. But there are small differences in preferences between them. Brown rat or black rat eat almost any food, but they prefer high-quality products, such as meat and fresh bread. These rats require from 1/2 to 1 fluid ounce of water per day when fed dry food.
Roof rat generally preferred vegetables, fruits and cereals, and may consume up to 1/2 to 1 ounces of food per day from various sources. They do not readily accept meat or fish. They love corn, sliced apple, sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, plums, pineapple, cookies, donuts, sweet candy, peanut butter and tomatoes. They also consume one ounce of water per day.
Rats have a gnawing habit when they eat. Their chewing ability helps them to chew and gnaw through almost everything.
