The red panda is slightly larger than a domestic cat is an arboreal mammal of wood and the only species of the genus Ailurus. They are characterized by the presence of reddish-brown fur, a long, bushy tail and waddle like front legs shorter. The main food of this animal is bamboo, omnivorous, but it also feeds on eggs, fish, birds, insects and small mammals, depending on the circumstances. They are lonely and are active from dawn to dusk and mostly sedentary during the day. They are widely distributed in the temperate forests of the Himalayas, Nepal and China. Also found in the northern India, Bhutan and northern Myanmar.
According to the population of these animals may be from 2,000 to 22,000 currently. They are protected under the laws of different countries, as they are under risk due to poaching and habitat destruction. It has been classified as vulnerable in the IUCN list again in 2009, two subtypes are known today. It is quite applicable to live in captivity and are often found in zoos.
The red panda is considered a living fossil and is a distant relative of the Giant Panda. It is believed that they first appeared in the Tertiary period some 10 million years ago in Eurasia. Fossils have been found in China and the UK. They lives at an altitude of 2,200 to 4,800 m, living in areas of moderate temperature changes.
