The sedan or the saloon is a passenger car in three boxes with A, B, & C-pillars and principal volumes in separate compartments for engines, passenger cars and cargo. The passenger compartment has two rows of seats and enough space for passengers in the rear compartment for adult passengers. The cargo compartment is usually located at the rear, with the exception of some rear-wheel drive models such as the Renault Dauphine, Tatra T613, Volkswagen Type 3 and Chevrolet Corvair. This is one of the most common body styles. A battery electric liftback, such as the Tesla S model, does not have a compartment for the engine, but a front cargo compartment and a rear cargo compartment.

The main purpose of the sedan is to carry people and their luggage on ordinary roads. Variants of the sedan car have a central pillar (B-pillar), which supports the roof and is available in two- and four-door versions. As a rule, sedans have two or three box body.

The shape and position of a two-door and four-door car sedans may be identical, only the central B pillar is located at the rear to accommodate the longer doors of the two-door versions. For example, the classic 1962 sedans have the same windshield, column A, roof, C-pillar, and rear window. The two-door sedan has longer doors and includes the slope of the rear side window and even the fourth window, which has a shape at right angles to the C-pillar, like the rear doors of a four-door sedan.
