Shopping cart (US English) or trolley (UK English), also known by a variety of other names, are wheeled carts provided by stores or shops, especially supermarkets. Customers use cart while shopping, move around the premises before heading to the checkout counter, cash register, or cash counter. Increasing the amount of merchandise that shoppers can collect increases the potential for purchases in a single trip, increasing the profitability of store.

In many cases, customers can also use carts to transport purchased goods to their vehicle, but some carts are designed to magnetically lock the wheels and never leave the store or designated parking lot. In many locations in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, customers are encouraged to leave their carts in designated locations in parking lots and store employees return carts to the entrance. In some areas, lock mechanisms are installed that are released by inserting coins or tokens, which allow shoppers to return the cart to a designated location after using it, at which time the coins or tokens should be redeemed.

Studies show that shoppers are advised to sanitize the handles or baskets, before filling with groceries due to high levels of bacteria that live in the shopping carts. This is because the cart has a high level of contact with the skin flora of a previous user.

Most modern shopping carts are made of metal or a combination of metal and plastic, making them easy to collect and move in large numbers at once and nesting with each other in a line to save storage space. Carts come in a variety of sizes, the larger ones can carry a child. There is also a dedicated cart designed for two children and an electric mobility scooter with a basket designed for the physically challenged customers.

In the United States, 24,000 children are injured in shopping carts each year. Some stores in the US and abroad have child carrying carts with handles that look like cars or vans where child can sit equipped with a steering wheel and sometimes a horn. Such “Car-Carts” provide protection and convenience by restraining, lowering to the ground, protecting against falling objects and amused.
