It has from 3 to 7 strings gut tuned in fourths or fifths (or both), as well as a lower level of 12 wire strings that vibrate in sympathy with the first set. It can be played alone or in a small ensemble. Indigenous to India subcontinent, sitar was popularized in the West in 1960 by the Indian virtuoso Ravi Shankar and is sometimes used in rock music.
